 | God's Abundant Help Oct 20, 2007 |
A Healing Year opens with the information that Alaric Lewis's mother died when he was seven years old, a fact that is revisited throughout the book, each time from a slightly different angle, but always in relation to the many facets of loss. The book is divided by month, with a short reflection for each day, all beginning with a quotation from scripture or an author such as Oscar Wilde ("Where there is sorrow there is holy ground") or Ralph Waldo Emerson (We boil at different degrees").
Lewis focuses on awareness of God's presence in our daily lives as a way of understanding grief and the toll death takes on the living. If we begin to listen to that presence, see God in others, and feel Him in our hearts, he writes, "the sheer suffering and pain of loss can be transformed in our hearts. With God's abundant help, we can begin to truly heal: one day at a time."
The entries cover a range of topics related to loss, grief, and healing. For example, Lewis recommends laughter, cautions against denial, supports the concept of "offering it up," and suggests ways to help those who are suffering. Above all, he urges us to trust in God's mercy. At times Lewis carries a theme over several days, as the feeling of emptiness experienced by Abraham, Ruth, and David in Matthew 1: 2-6. Whereas these three were at times unsure of God's presence, love, and compassion, Lewis writes, we have the reality of Jesus.
