Overview
Examines the current cultural and political wars within society and advocates for a revitalized Christianity that can see truths in both sides and find new ways of looking at such controversial issues as abortion, homosexuality, and the Iraq War.

Publishers Description

Everyone agrees that America is polarized, with ever-hardening positions held by people less and less willing to listen to one another. No one agrees on what to do about it.

One solution that hasn t yet been tried, says Adam Hamilton, is for thinking persons of faith to model for the rest of the country a richer, more thoughtful conversation on the political, moral, and religious issues that divide us. Hamilton rejects the easy assumptions and sloppy analysis of black and white thinking, seeking instead the truth that resides on all sides of the issues, and offering a faithful and compassionate way forward.

He writes, "I don't expect you to agree with everything I've written. I expect that in the future even I won't agree with everything I've written here. The point is not to get you to agree with me, but to encourage you to think about what you believe. In the end I will be inviting those of you who find this book resonates with what you feel is true, to join the movement to pursue a middle way between the left and the right - to make your voices heard - and to model for our nation and for the church, how we can listen, learn, see truth as multi-sided, and love those with whom we disagree."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
With substance  May 20, 2010
I am not an American so I dont know much about the conflicts between the liberals and the conservatives portraited in the book. However, I do appreciate the good writing and the words of wisdom of the author. A great read for all Christians who do not think that they already possess the perfect truth and know God more than anybody else. Recommended!

p.s. I strongly suggest people who like this book to read "What's so amazing about grace?" by Philip Yancey. They are of the same genre. Meanwhile, below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.

Yet if "conservative" means holding on to what is good from the past, and being cautious in embracing change simply for the sake of change, then mark me conservative! If being conservative within the Christian community means retaining the historic doctrines of the Christian faith as articulated in the creeds, then I am conservative.....if liberal means holding to the absolute right of individuals to do whatever they choose, or if conservative means simply seeking to maintain the status quo, I could not be defined as either liberal or conservative! pg6
Among the struggles we have as human beings is our tendency to "major in the minors"....We cant see the forest for the trees. We win the battle and lose the war. We struggle to keep the main thing the main thing. We make a mountain out of a molehill. While this is a universal affliction of all human beings, religious people excel at it. pg9
But the hope for the future of Christianity will be found, in part, in our willingness to accept that no one of us has all of the truth. We must be able to see the value in another's position, practice and doctrine. pg13
One of the hallmarks of our tendency to sin is that we feel the need to criticize, we take pleasure in gossiping, and we feel qualified to make judgements, often with very little information. pg20
In many ways the evidence of our faith is found in our ability to control our tongue (or our keyboard). pg23
It aint those parts of the Bible that I cant understand that bother me, it is the parts that I do understand. - Mark Twain pg59

Excellent study on several of today's hot topics. Thought provoking and sound basis for its discussions. Best if used with the instructional video and study handouts.
